In a study using rats as as animal model, prolongued exposure to cigarette smoke was associated with the activation of enzymes called mitogen-activated protein kinases that govern cell growth and survival in heart muscle. Activation of these enzymes may be a key event in cigarette smoke-induced heart injury, and lead to disfiguring of heart.

Smoking has a lot of negative effects. Scienctists have yet to discover all of them for sure. You inhale poisonous smoke, that's obviously bad for your body and can kill you in the long term. But smokers still don't care.

Well it's not that they don't care, but that they can not quit!

It's hard to quit from what I've heard, and I can imagine that it is. If you've ever been addicted to anything, you'll know how hard it is to stop. However, it's pretty obvious that the health risks still have not scared away the young smokers, I just hope that eventually get some common sense in their heads and stop.

Smoking is bad for health in the long run. And so is pollution, fried meat and salt water. I've heard of people who smoked their whole lives and died in their late 80s being run over by a truck. BTW: Why are you picking on smokers and not on alcohol drinkers? which one is worse in your opinion?

Yeah, my opinion is that if we can ban smoking then we can ban cheeseburgers- I mean we have way more obese people than smokers in this country, I think fat people are a much larger health problem...hell cigarettes remedy that problem.

What it basically comes down to is that if there is one thing you own, it is your own body. The decision of what to do with that body is your ultimate right. Sadly, not many people in this country agree with me. Most liberals I know want to make it near-criminal to smoke, most conservatives want to ban abortion, and plenty of people I know are still hung up on drug prohibition.
